The full form of IAS is Indian Administrative Service. But before 26 January 1950 IAS was known as Imperial Civil Service.
The civil services exam is conducted by the UPSC( Union Public Service Commission ) for the recruitment of IAS, IPS, IFS, and many other civil services officers.
IAS is the most prestigious position for civil services officers. An IAS officer Manages the government work from the state level to the central level. At the district level, IAS is concerned about development duties.
The civil services exam is the most competitive exam in India. The candidate takes many years to crack this exam. Very few candidates have the ability to crack it at the first attempt. IAS is a dream job in India. The candidate who was selected for the IAS goes for 2 years of training before working as a Collector, District Magistrate, and Executive Magistrate.
The minimum education anyone needs to sit in the civil services exam is graduation from a recognized university. Every year exam is scheduled by Union Public Service Commission for IAS.
How To Become IAS
Every year UPSC conducts an exam of civil services examination for candidates who want to become IAS. For becoming an IAS you have to qualify for the civil services exam with good rank. IAS is a part of All India Services. IAS serves the central government and the state government.
You need at least a bachelor’s degree from a recognized university to appear in the examination. The candidates who are in the final year of their course can also appear for the civil services exam.
The civil services exam has 2 stages for the selection process. The first stage is the prelims exam and the second stage is the mains exam. After qualifying in all the exams government will provide you with a position in the civil services department. Every year over 10 lakh people appear for the civil services exam only 180 become IAS Officer.
Eligibility Criteria For IAS
Before appearing for the civil services exam you must have fulfilled these eligibility criteria:
Educational Qualification
The candidate who is appearing for the civil services exam must have a bachelor’s degree from a recognized university.
Age Limit
- For the general category, the candidate should have a minimum age of 21 and the maximum age of 32.
- OBC category candidates should have a minimum age of 21 and maximum age of 35.
- For SC/ST candidates minimum age is 21 but the maximum age is 37.
- If you are an Ex-servicemen you can get a relaxation of 5 years in maximum age.
- For PWD candidates the minimum age is 21 and the maximum age is 42.
Nationality
If you are appearing for a civil services exam you should have Indian Citizenship.
Number of Attempts
A candidate can give 6 attempts for the civil services exam. After that, he is not eligible for the exam.
Salary Of An IAS Officer
The starting salary of an IAS officer is 56,100 apart from that IAS officers also get DA( Dearness Allowance), HRA (House Rent Allowance), TA (Travel Allowance), and other allowances also. IAS salary varies according to their post.

Civil Services Exam Pattern
UPSC civil services exam has divided into two stages. In the first stage, there is the Prelims exam and the second stage is the Mains exam. Mains exam is also divided into two parts. The first is a written test and the second is a personal interview.
Prelims Exam

Prelim is an offline exam that consists of two papers. Prelims is an objective type paper. Paper 1 tests your general ability and paper 2 tests your English language. Paper 1 and paper 2 both are 200 marks papers. You will get 2 hours of time for both paper 1 and paper 2. For every wrong answer, 1/3rd of the marks will be deducted.
Mains Exam
The Mains exam has both subjective and objective papers. Every paper contains 250 marks. The main exam consists of 9 papers of which 1 is an essay paper, 4 general studies papers, 2 optional papers, and 2 language papers.
Interview
The final round of the civil services exam is the interview round. The candidate who qualifies for the mains exam can appear for the interview. The interviewers will check your personality, intellectualism, and moral integrity that you are suitable for this job or not. The interview round is 275 marks. After the interview completion, they will give marks out of 275. These marks will add to your main exam score on whose basis the final merit list will come.
